Streak.txt Has a New Home at Neokaal

Streak.txt has moved from being my personal project to being a Neokaal project. Neokaal will steward and develop it from here, while keeping it open source.

It is a small shift, but an important one. Streak.txt started as a personal experiment in plain-text habit tracking. Moving it to Neokaal gives it a clearer home and makes it easier to keep working on it as part of Neokaal’s open-source work.

What Streak.txt Is

Streak.txt is a plain-text format and desktop app for tracking streaks: habits, routines, practices, or anything else you want to keep going. The idea is simple: your history should live in readable, portable files, not inside something you cannot easily inspect or move. It is local-first and intentionally simple. Where It Came From

Streak.txt came out of a simple annoyance I kept running into: a lot of habit and streak tools make the record feel less durable than the habit. The app may be nice, but the actual history often sits somewhere you cannot easily read, move, edit, archive, or check. If you are trying to keep something going for months or years, that feels wrong.

So the experiment was: what if the file came first? A plain-text file is boring in the best way. You can open it anywhere, back it up, commit it to version control, copy it around, or keep it long after a particular app stops mattering.

The personal-project phase was useful because it kept the idea small. It made the important part clearer: Streak.txt should stay readable, understandable, and under the user’s control. Once that direction was clear, moving it into Neokaal felt like the right next step.

Why It Moved to Neokaal

Neokaal is taking stewardship of Streak.txt so the project has a stable home beyond my personal account. It also gives future desktop releases, signed packages, documentation, and other project resources a proper home.

It also fits the kind of software Neokaal wants to make and maintain: useful, understandable tools that do not make simple things more complicated than they need to be. Streak.txt is a small project, and that is part of the point. The goal is not to turn it into a big platform. The goal is to give it enough structure that it can be useful for longer.

What Changes, and What Does Not

The main change is the project home. Neokaal is now responsible for its stewardship, including development, documentation, and releases.

The important parts stay the same. Streak.txt remains open source. It stays plain-text first. Development stays public. Users keep their data in files they can read and control.

So this is less a change in direction and more a change in where the project lives. Streak.txt is still the same idea: a simple way to track streaks without making the record harder to own than the habit itself.

What Comes Next

The project page has already moved to Neokaal. The main thing still pending is broader desktop distribution. That includes signed packages and, when the apps are ready, potential releases through the Mac App Store and Microsoft Store. Development will continue at Neokaal; the move is not a pause or a reset, just a new home for the project.

Feedback and contributions are welcome, especially from people who care about small tools, readable files, and habits that outlast apps. The best version of Streak.txt is still a simple one, just with better maintenance around it.
